In the historical novel ROOTS, how much of African Islamic culture of the story was true in The Gambia of....?

Much of it in a sense, for it was mostly Muslim slavers who would capture people and sell them into slavery to westerners. Many African slaves where also forcibly converted to Islam in order to keep them docile.
